Renting a car for golf on the Costa del Sol

Car parked on grass, the kind of rental a golfer picks up for a golf trip on the Costa del Sol.

The Open de España Femenino, the last event of the Ladies European Tour season, runs from 26 to 29 November 2026 at La Cala Resort in Mijas, a good reason to book the car early.

October 29, 2026 – For a golf trip on the Costa del Sol, the car to book is the one whose boot takes the bag lying flat, rather than the one with the biggest litre figure. A travel cover such as the Sun Mountain Kube measures 132 cm long on the inside. That is why the width of the boot space matters more than its capacity.

How many golf bags fit in a rental boot

A bag in its cover only travels lying flat, so it fits if the usable width of the boot is greater than the length of the cover. The USGA equipment rules cap the length of a club at 48 inches, 1.219 metres, putters aside, so a cover has to be longer than that.

Car makers often publish litres and little else, and litres can mislead. Volkswagen lists 351 L for the Polo and 455 L for the T-Cross, rising to 1,125 L and 1,281 L with the seats folded, but gives no width, so only a test load settles it. Toyota does publish the dimensions of the C-HR, with 388 L, 811 mm of depth and up to 1,580 mm of width. In that boot two covers, each 36 cm deep, take about 72 cm of the 81 cm available. A third bag means folding a seat.

On paper, a 132 cm cover fits across that width. It is no guarantee, because the width drops between the wheel arches. A people carrier such as the Toyota Proace Verso lists between 550 and 1,600 L depending on the body, so the real space is worth measuring. Booking by category secures the size of the car but not the model, so it is best to choose the category and not count on one particular boot.

How to test the load before you sign

The most reliable step is to ask the rental desk to load the bags for real, covers on, and check that the boot closes without forcing and that the rear window stays clear. In Spain the traffic authority, the DGT, advises keeping luggage inside the boot, the heavy items at the bottom and everything secured so it cannot slide when braking.

With a soft cover, the head of the driver club is what suffers most if a suitcase rests on top during the drive. So the bags go in first, lying flat, with the club heads pointing the same way, and the suitcases go around them.

What to check before leaving the rental desk

The European Consumer Centre in Spain advises checking the car carefully before signing and getting every existing mark written down in a report with a copy, because the driver ends up paying for any damage that is not recorded. Standard insurance with an excess usually leaves out glass, tyres and wipers.

Check the fuel type and the tank policy, and when returning the car ask for a staff member to inspect it on the spot and take photos of the inside and outside.

In Spain, since 1 January 2026, the connected V16 beacon has replaced the warning triangles. It is worth asking where it is kept, and where the spare wheel or puncture kit is, so the bags do not block it.

From Málaga airport to the courses around Marbella

From Málaga airport, the golf courses near Marbella lie between 44 and 71 km away, from about 46 minutes to a little over an hour without traffic, according to a route calculation with OpenStreetMap data. Marbella itself is about 55 km and 50 minutes in normal conditions. If the flight lands late, tell the desk the real arrival time. If another player joins the group, a category with more seats beats stacking bags and losing rear visibility.
