Since 1972, it has also been a feature of every season on The European Tour and has seen some of golf\u2019s greatest names get their hands on the trophy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-de-Espana-Sergio-Jimenez.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43171\" src=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-de-Espana-Sergio-Jimenez.jpg\" alt=\"Open-de-Espana-Sergio-Jimenez\" width=\"640\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-de-Espana-Sergio-Jimenez.jpg 640w, https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-de-Espana-Sergio-Jimenez-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amongst those are Major Champions <strong>Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo, Padraig Harrington, Bernhard Langer, Arnold Palmer <\/strong>and<strong> Charl Schwartzel<\/strong> alongside European Number Ones <strong>Robert Karlsson <\/strong>and<strong> Colin Montgomerie<\/strong>. Four Spaniards, aside from Ballesteros, have also claimed the title since 1972 \u2013 <strong>Antonio Garrido (1972), \u00c1lvaro Quir\u00f3s (2010), Miguel \u00c1ngel Jim\u00e9nez (2014) <\/strong>and<strong> Garc\u00eda <\/strong>himself<strong>\u00a0(2002)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>\u20ac2 million tournament<\/strong> will be the first event of the 2016 season to be played on European soil and as well as the support of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and Real Club Valderrama, the tournament also has the full backing of Garc\u00eda, the 11 time European Tour champion and five time Ryder Cup winner, who will assume the role of tournament host.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-Espana-Sergio-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43163\" src=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-Espana-Sergio-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Open-Espana-Sergio-2015\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-Espana-Sergio-2015.jpg 640w, https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Open-Espana-Sergio-2015-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda\u2019s involvement \u2013 through his Foundation which was set up in 2002 \u2013 further emphasises the direct player involvement on this season\u2019s European Tour.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Sergio-Garcia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-43161\" src=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Sergio-Garcia.jpg\" alt=\"Sergio-Garcia\" width=\"171\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Sergio Garc\u00eda<\/strong> said: <em>\u201cI am delighted to have this involvement with the Real Club Valderrama Open de Espa\u00f1a hosted by the Sergio Garc\u00eda Foundation.
