He sandwiched a second birdie of the day at the 11<sup>th<\/sup> with a bogey either side, before coming alive at the 14<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>He kicked off the hot streak with a simple two-putt birdie at the par five 14<sup>th<\/sup>, before converting from 17 feet at the 15<sup>th<\/sup>. He parred the next but moved within one thanks to a stiff tee shot at the par three 17<sup>th<\/sup> to five feet, before adding a final birdie at the short par four 18<sup>th<\/sup> from 12 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Race to Dubai Number Three Penge was the pick of the early starters as he eyes a third title of 2025 after claiming the Hainan Classic and Danish Golf Championship earlier this year, and he was joined on five under by Lacroix, also a winner in Denmark, and 2021 Ryder Cup player Wiesberger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Open-Esp-Ayora-1R.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-169386\" src=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Open-Esp-Ayora-1R.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Open-Esp-Ayora-1R.jpg 640w, https:\/\/hundreds-wordpress-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/mygolfway\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Open-Esp-Ayora-1R-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The leading Spanish hopeful is Angel Ayora, who shares sixth place with Scotsman Grant Forrest, Frenchman Alex Levy, England\u2019s Dan Bradbury and Canadian Aaron Cockerill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeantour.com\/dpworld-tour\/open-de-espana-presented-by-madrid-2025\/leaderboard?round=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Sam Bairstow: <\/strong>I think coming in, the focus was on getting finished because of the dark so to finish with a few birdies there was great&#8230;\u00a0I love it here, I played here for the first time last year and I loved it so it&#8217;s just a good week &#8211; obviously the city&#8217;s good, course is good, the fans are good so yeah, I like coming back here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ugo Coussaud: <\/strong>It was a great day, many, many great shots close to the pin &#8211; especially on the two par-fives, and I made the two good putts &#8211; so just a great day&#8230;\u00a0I had a few bad shots as well but I recovered quite nicely so I&#8217;m very happy with today&#8230;\u00a0It&#8217;s a tricky course, I think you need to know it a little bit to play it properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marco Penge: <\/strong>It\u2019s pretty challenging out there. The wind\u2019s not too strong, but it\u2019s up, and it\u2019s quite a tricky golf course. The greens are really small, so I felt like I managed my game pretty well. I hit some terrible shots and made some bad swings, but that\u2019s golf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frederic Lacroix: <\/strong>It was just a solid round. I tried to stay in the fairway. At some point it had to come together. I\u2019ve been waiting for this a little bit this season. It was starting to come together, but we\u2019ll see how it goes this week&#8230;\u00a0Of course, I want to qualify for the Play-Offs, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
